What is a workation anyway?

Before I go into my first real workation, we need to clarify what a workation actually is.

This becomes relatively clear as soon as you realize that the word "workation" is derived from "Work" and "Vacation" is composed of. A workation is therefore a Combination of work and vacation. People work from anywhere and also use the advantages of traveling for private reasons.

Why Thailand of all places?

I love Thailand. I have been there several times on vacation and each time I was blown away by the culture, the beautiful beaches, the friendly faces on the streets, the relaxed atmosphere (even in Bangkok apart from the traffic). For me, it is one of the most beautiful countries on our planet, at least that I have traveled to so far or know from TV. That's why I chose Thailand in the form of Bangkok and the nomadic stronghold of Chiang Mai for my first real workation.

It also turned out that I was able to meet up with my brother there, who is also a freelancer and cosmopolitan. A real men's trip, so to speak, only with work and less alcohol 😉

Destination of my workation in Bangkok or Chiang Mai

The aim of my workation was to healthy work-life balance to reach.

In concrete terms, this means that I work-related I wanted to keep customer availability at the same level, not neglect any work that needed to be done, use the time difference of 3 hours (to Dubai) or 6 hours (to Germany) to my advantage.

My "Vacation intentions" were: Switching off a bit in my head, enjoying Thai culture & cuisine, exploring Chiang Mai and visiting an elephant sanctuary.

Achieved work-life balance of my workation

I would like to express how I did in a few facts and figures:
  • 22 hours worked (normally approx. 50 - 60 hours / week)
  • 3 meetings, 2 of them spontaneous
  • According to feedback, accessibility for customers was at the same "top level" (end of quote :))
  • Spontaneous work prepared and enabled by time shift
  • 3 out of 4 must-have goals achieved
  • 3 out of 5 low priority targets achieved
  • It wasn't always easy for me to switch off in my head, but it was a good start
  • Exploring Chiang Mai
  • Enjoying Thai cuisine and the flair
  • Visiting an elephant sanctuary

Conclusion of my workation in Thailand

I do travel a lot on short trips where I work on the plane or during my stay, but a conscious one, Workation lasting several days is definitely something else, much more positive.

I have completed the work I set out to do. In addition, this Equalization and change of scenery for me extremely valuable for new ideas & innovations in my business.

But of course the current work also fits a workation. Working at home at your desk with large monitors in a familiar environment has just as many advantages as working on the move on a small monitor, with background scenery, etc...

But this flexibility is exactly what I value so much about my self-employment!

Have you ever been to a workation?

Then get in touch with me. I look forward to the exchange!
